CURRENT MISSION AND VISION STATEMENT

By most standards and comparisons Burlington is already a very livable city.  However more can be done, and it is our mission to do so in the area of providing additional recreational outlets for people of all ages, with consideration for our elderly residents and those whose recreational options are limited by physical disabilities.

Specifically, we intend to develop a long-range plan for the construction and promotion of facilities for boules (Bocce and Petanque), and also for shuffleboard, miniature golf, and horseshoe pitching.  These and similar activities can be played by people of all ages and levels of physical ability.   They allow for competition across age and sex brackets, provide some physical activity, and promote socializing among diverse sets of people.   On an individual basis they provide healthy recreational outlets, while on a community basis they can serve to bring people of different socio-economic, racial, and ethnic groups closer together.  This will make Burlington an even more livable place than it already is.

Our vision is that ultimately facilities for the above activities will be located throughout Burlington. If sufficient funds were provided some of these facilities could be adapted so that they would also be available for use in winter.

GOALS

To actualize our mission and vision the following goals are steps in the process (goals are suggestions for the club to consider):

  • Establish a cohesive cohort of individuals who support the club’s mission/vision, and who want to take part in building the club and take part in its activities.
  • Select a name and logo for the club, which is now called the Burlington Boules Club.
  • Prepare and present for discussion and modification a site plan for a four-lane facility that meets international specifications for competition, has seating, and the necessary amenities.  The plan will contain cost estimates for the different aspects and show how the facility could be built in phases if sufficient funds were not available for complete build out at one time.
  • Happening this fall, select time and places for two demonstration/play events in which club members will play boules and explain the games to interested spectators.  Non-members will be invited to play.  These events will be publicized in the local papers, word of mouth, and via posters.
  • An article about the club will be written and published in the Free Press.
  • Interested club members will make meet with the Parks and Recreation Commission and inform them of our activities and goals, and request needed assistance.
  • Develop and submit a Community Develop Block Grant to the relevant NPA/s.
  • Solicit funds from other possible funding sources.
  • Construct complete boules facility or those parts that funds allow and priorities dictate.
  • Begin formal and informal play at the facility.
  • For the purpose of expanding Boules play throughout Vermont, make presentations and have demonstrations in other Vermont cities and towns.
  • The club will participate in local, state, regional, national, and international competitions.
  • The club will host and televise the 2024 Boules World Cup.
